ROBLES DEL RIO, Calif. — October 28, 2026. With California’s wet season approaching, residents of Upper Carmel Valley have an official source for monitoring the Carmel River: the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Robles del Rio river forecast point, RDRC1.
The California-Nevada River Forecast Center lists the monitoring location at approximately 36.47° north, 121.73° west in Monterey County. It is a river reference point, not a property address or a prediction of what will happen at any particular home.
What the posted flood levels mean
According to the NOAA forecast center’s published thresholds for this point:
- 7.5 feet: action stage.
- 8.5 feet: minor flood stage.
- 11.0 feet: moderate flood stage.
- 13.0 feet: major flood stage.
These are reference thresholds, not the river’s current stage. Weather and hydrologic forecasts change frequently. A forecast crossing a threshold does not automatically describe water levels or road safety at every location within Robles del Rio.
Why historical context matters
The forecast center’s historical peak-flow table includes major Carmel River events, including the floods of 1995 and 2023. These past records explain why the area maintains flood-monitoring resources, but they do not mean a current flood warning exists.
Where to check before traveling or taking protective action
Review NOAA’s Carmel River at Robles del Rio (RDRC1) current graph and forecast and National Weather Service Monterey Bay Area alerts. Monterey County’s historical flood hazards page provides background, not live instructions.
If authorities issue evacuation notices or roadway closures, follow those official instructions. California58 does not provide real-time emergency dispatch or independent water-level measurements.
Source note: Thresholds and historical events refer specifically to NOAA’s RDRC1 site. This article will be updated if official threshold classifications change.
